What is Minecraft?

Minecraft is a video game created in 2011 by Swedish software programmer Markus Persson. It is available to play on a range of computer and video game devices.

It is often referred to as a ‘sandbox’ game, which means that just like a sandpit in the backyard, how you play is largely up to you and your imagination.

Minecraft is also often compared to LEGO bricks, in that the world you play in is mostly made up of three-dimensional blocks. In the game you can break these blocks to collect natural resources like iron and coal, and also create with blocks, making shelters and other structures.

As well as blocks, the world of Minecraft is inhabited by ‘mobs’. Mobs are characters like cows, pigs and chickens, as well as hostile creatures like large spiders and zombies.

How you spend your time in Minecraft will depend largely on what game mode you’re playing in – whether you’re focused on surviving, creating, being a spectator or a combination of all of these!
