Run an Instagram photo walk to teach digital skills

An Instagram photo walk was the first community event of the Goldfields Go Digi Pop Up Festival. This was a hands-on workshop facilitated by ABC Open Producer Jane Curtis. Here's how the session was run so you can have a go too!

The workshop was split in to three parts:

  • Theory –before heading off on our photo walk, Jane walked us through how to use this popular application.
  • Practical – learning through doing, we ventured outside the Bendigo Library to take photos with our devices.  Our mission was to take photos relating to the themes ‘something old’, ‘reflection’, ‘action’ and ‘two’.
  • Show and tell – our photos were then displayed on the big screen, where Jane gave us further helpful advice and we had the opportunity to ask lots of questions.

One of the highlights of the workshop was the chance for participants to learn from local Instagram ‘celebrities’, Des (@hummingbyrd) and Joel (@joelbramley).  Des and Joel were very generous with their advice, and also helped participants in the practical component of the workshop – true Go Digi Mentors!

As well as learning how to take and edit our photos using Instagram, we also learnt about hashtags. We were encouraged to add the hashtag #NYDI (National Year of Digital Inclusion) to share our photos easily with others in group.

Participants were all very supportive of one another’s digital efforts, not just in the workshop but online as well, with many adding thoughtful comments to each other’s photos following the event.

Post-photo walk, it has also been fascinating to see the different ways the workshop participants have been using Instagram – from posting photographs of homemade sock monkeys (@lostsockshome), to sharing photos from a local community art project (@englightenartproject).

Instagram Photo Walks are a fun way to learn new digital skills, as well as a great way to explore your community and build your online (and offline) social network.

We would like to thank ABC Open Producers Jane Curtis and Marc Eiden for facilitating Photo Walks in Bendigo and Ballarat, as well as the Bendigo and Ballarat Libraries for providing venues.

If you’re a Go Digi Network Partner, we’d love to see you hosting a Photo Walk soon!  You can even print out our helpful guides for your participants:
